Pt. Barrow, Alaska
July 27
A great flight of Chironomids (semita sp.?) flying on July 7) occurred this am around
tundra ponds behind ARL. It did not
approach the earlier July flight in total
numbers, but was quite noticeable. Did
some exploratory work on Ectophila pond to the
west of ridge plots. Green midge species
is out in fair numbers none observed in flight
but many specimens were collected on Ectophila
grass stems along with a small black +
white-banded leg species as well as a very
small sp. No birds observed around
the pond or adjacent moor. Also a great
many adult Trichops are on the Ectophila
stems + leaves apparently possess very poor
powers of flight as they just drop to the water
surface when disturbed.
July 28
Day in the lab - rained 1/4" + m built bird traps
July 29
Meter plots on ridge - light snow falling
during most of afternoon. Insects largely
inactive except for 2 Bombus queens which
were gathering pollen from Petasites right
in the snow. Vegetation very wet - midges
resting in it with heads pointed downward.
The Muscoid flies were absent and somewhat
active in the falling snow. At the Ectophila
pond the Trichops were resting on the stones
