Atund 1952 July 24 Day spent around lab - bird trapping - very cold no insects noted in wing behind AKL July 25 Overcast with light SW wind much warmer Today than yesterday at 0900 behind AKL in landing grid a few midges in flight (all TTT' + similar to the early July ones in appearance) also a few Cedes were noted during the course of our strip over the grid. July 26 Meter plots on ridge. Overcast most of the time - intermittent sunshine + quite cold. No large puns noted during sampling work (1 pm - 4:30 pm). Muscid flies appear to be most conspicuous element of insect fauna on basis of meter plot replicates. Crane flies - especially the vestigial winged female species still in fair abundance (±1 per meter sq). [illegible] observed. Chironomids still at low level although on aretrophila filled ponds & marsh to west of ridge plots green sp in fair numbers resting on vegetation. Also in this situation are the adult Trichoptera also resting on Aretrophila stems along edges of these ponds. Several other spp of Chironomids especially small species diving about the water surface near pond edges.
