Pt. Barrow, Alaska July 20. Meter plots on ridge this afternoon-overcast with easterly wind. Longspurs in groups of 5-10 especially around polygons of high relief and transverse ditch sections across the ridge. These man made ditches ±3 feet deep and about 5-6' wide still contain some water, in depths up to 1' and many midges and Muscoid flies seem to congregate about their banks as do also Tipulids. Though no sampling has been done in these borders-especially those adjacent to the water it appears at least superficially that the pop levels are higher-concentration? In spite of the overcast conditions + rain of previous evening + early morning hours insects were in much abundance. A walking sweep over approximately 1 mile of terrain on ridge, mostly over high polygons + intervening lows and over marshy areas revealed presence of great numbers of midges and Muscoid flies. Tipulids both of the 2 "wriglers" female species were in evidence about 1 or 2 per sq. meter of high polygon type. Males were not quite so abundant but can counts indicate that their level is about equal to females. Fungivoids seem to be lower—at least in actual count on meter plots + general observations, but may be not so active on this type of day
