July 17
flight. Mosquitoes were much in evidence and
were still in flight and pestiferous
late as 10:00 am. On visiting the owl
nest which contains 2 young several
mosquitoes (all must likely Aedes communis
or sp. near) were observed sucking blood
from the owlets and persisted about the nest
during our visits. On visiting jaeger nest
with three downy fledgling young no mosquitoes
were observed about the young. Midges were
still in evidence upon leaving the overland
around 10:00 pm. It is possible that the
mosquitoes may be breeding in the Eriophila
marsh ponds.
July 18. Clear bright and warm morning with a
slight 5W wind. Mosquitoes behind ARL
in fairly large numbers and very pestiferous
particularly around 11:00 to 12 noon. Large
numbers landed on ourselves while additional
numbers swarmed about us.
July 19. Rained off and on today. This afternoon
visited the ridge areas beyond but did
no collecting. Mosquitoes were still in
gardenes and at times quite bothersome.
On visiting the Snowy Owl nest mosquitoes
were again observed to be drawing blood
from the young owlets.
