Hurd 1952 Pt. Barrow, Alaska July 9 Sampling Notes areas midges ran as high as +100 in a 15 minute count to as low as 25 per sq meter in same time interval. Some Ephydrids and Cecids noted but in general fauna seemed markedly depressed as contrasted with yesterday. Marsh areas had +200 to +500 midges per sq. meter pa 15 minutes. Langopous were about in this situation but in foregoing ones present and were taking a high percentage of the midges. Today the midge species composition became greater with the appearance of many more species and in more areas their presence was noted than previously. Towards late afternoon 3-5 they began to gather in groups as the wind abated and perform their "Dance". Several (7) Bombyx spp were seen in flight over Betasites areas and apparently were not visiting the flowers which appears have reached a peak in this bloom. many more tapeworms an ant as cockleburs and some Salsifages. Coming out of old lemming holes are many Tepulids (small sp.) and some of the smaller midge as well as a few Fungivoridae and Muscividae.
