Hurd 1953 Pt. Barrow, Alaska Aug 1 was the drop off in counts of muscoids to less than 1 per meter - this may have been occasioned by cold weather, but even on willow ridge where generally counts are a little higher they were much less than 1 per sq meter / 15 mins Schneumonids on First Scar + intermed. site, ran around ±1.5 per sq. meter per 15 minutes. Only an occasional midge was observed as spider too. All other scorpore activity gone. This may be the final crash!!! August 4 afternoon out in ridge. Generally overcast with occasional rift. Warm with light east wind. Insect activity continues down - those noted were muscoids & ichneumonids in either areas between first scars (intermediate) or in willow part of beach ridge. A few midge (Chironomids) were also in evidence, but chironomid activity quite low even along fresh water lake. On way back through Dixon Cove I saw a sulfur butterfly (Colias) and managed to capture it. The item I handed ARL seeis was as follows for newsletters:
