Pt. Barrow, Alaska
July 31
Large swarms of chironomids of
apparently 2 spp (in separate swarms)
formed behind ARL this evening following
the overcast which moved in. Swarming
commenced shortly after 6 p.m. and abated
by 2200 as temperature fell. They were
insipicuous over most of the level grid
behind ARL in camp and down at
the sears. John Mohr U.S.C. said
they continued to fly individually
up to 0200 and were observed in
flights over the ocean. Plankton
samples by him about 1/4 mile out
yielded chironomids in water. No
mosquitoes were encountered
during my period of observation.
