Pt. Barns, Alaska
July 20 afternoon on ridge. Overcast light
west wind. Insect activity apparently
depressed somewhat by cold wind, but
the index of activity still high. Large
numbers of minute to small Chironomida
(+40 per sq. meter) were present in reticulated
areas between frost blisters, most of them
climbing up the vegetation. Muscid
activity was not as noticeable as
last time but individuals were higher than
preceding visit (see counts). Crane fly
activity in top of polygons noticeably
increased over last visit. Fungivoids
dropped. Mosquitoes dropped owing to
cold weather, but a few were encountered
during the events. Sciarids as on the
increase as also the scelidinum. Spiders
were more common in counts
than for any immediate previous events.
The vegetation changed quite perceptibly
in appearance. Petrotilus on top of the
ridge has appeared with a great
profusion of bloom—the stalks are
about 1/2 the height of last year's
dead stems, but even so stand out
quite conspicuously. The Ranunculus
along the beach ridge (marsh side)
