July 7
Sampling Notes
observations were made for 45 minutes
summer from 3:30 pm & 4:15 pm. 4
Bombus queens visited this area during
the observation period 3 during the 1st 15
minutes + 2 landed on flowers apparently
for nectar - other 1 in 1st 15 minute period
flew over but failed to stop - all there
were "black-tailed Bombus" queens. During
2nd 15 minute period 1 Bombus queen
of "red-tailed type" flew over but didn't stop.
Last 15 minute period no Bombus observed.

Sampling results may be somewhat lower
than actual since it was overcast this afternoon
with a strong southerly wind + sun was
obscured during shade of the operation.
This is particularly true in the case of the
Tenthredinidae ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera)
since they are most active during sunshine. Even
so, there was a noticeable increase generally,
in insect life per 100 sq. meters. Between 1:30 pm
& 3:45 pm 4 "red-tailed" specimens Bombus were
observed to visit flowers of Petasites frigidus
and apparently were more after nectar than
anything else (their hairs under examination
[esp. body hairs] had pollen grains much
in evidence). During the past 24 hr,
