Pt. Barrow, Alaska July 6 along the edge of an arctophila pond. Previous observations had shown that the chironomids along the edge of the pond to be only occasional in occurrence. The fungusgnat would attempt to reach the greater concentration of midge adults which were on the lee sides of the blades of arctophila grass by half wading, half fluttering out into the pond 2 to 3 feet. July 8 Afternoon on ridge - started out with light amount sunshine as afternoon progressed current became increasingly heavier, periods of sunlight decreasing. A cold 5-8 mph SW wind blew all during the counts. Count up slightly over last ten with the fungus gnats (= Fungivirids) being the highest in all types of areas. First scan ±2; intermediate ±4; marsh ±1. Chironomids came second, then all small species ±1/4" a much less. Only two Cecids encountered. Occasional were for whole afternoon, all situation the chrysopidae, which ran way less than 1 per sq. meter, and I doubt if one could be found in ratio of 1 per 50 sq. meters.
