July 5
Sampling on ridge this afternoon. Overcast
with low fog clearing, but no direct
sunlight - cold. Commonest insect per
sq. met. basis was the large Fungusmid.
Sciaraids emerging in larger numbers.
Occasional encounters were spiders, Anthomyid
Staphylinidae, Chrysomelidae, and midge
(Chironomid) adults. See count sheets
for quantitative data for above. Water
traps in Arctophile pond - both empty,
which stands in contrast to the previous
count, q.v. Botrytis blooms now
abundant, but not very numerous.
Ramunculus blooming in the wetter
places but are much below last year's
phenological equivalent. The Ridge
vegetation is becoming quite green
at central marsh, still the greenest
with the contrasting red arctophile
ponds. Anthomyids avoid the marsh
met. plot as absent - see earlier
count sheets - reason ?.
