Pt. Barrow, Alaska
June 2
arrived Pt. Barrow noon today after virtual
through flight from San Francisco--from which
departed 7pm June 1. Spent afternoon largely
getting set up. Looked at Snowy Owl nest S. of here.
June 3
Spent 1/2 hrs mt m tundra ± 2½ mi SSE
of ARL. Snow cover is approximately 70-80%
but is rapidly melting. Day largely overcast
with fog & surprisingly warm. Exploratory
insect work revealed large numbers of
Carabid & Staphylinid adults, some
larvae of latter, in the tightly packed moss
(Polythrichaceae) clumps. Several of these
were brought in for berleseing. Reports
indicate that the Scopelumatidae, Scopaeuma
vulpinum are already in flight. Not
many Collembola noted or as far as that
goes mites either; however, their presence
in relative numbers are to be established
by Berlese. A few larvae of Chrysomela
subsubcata were found in the moss
clumps. Plots of last year's work
as follows. Frost scar meter plot
free from snow--a few spiders & collembole
in evidence on surface. Intermediate
& Marsh plots covered with snow
intumulted at the stakes.
