Sampling Notes
schnemonoids, and Ephydrida. Meter
count gave 6 sawflies, 2 schnemonoids; 11
Ephydrida.
Exploratory ward in willow ridge showed
essentially the same per meter count as at the
point except the addition of 1 fungivoid
adult per meter, 2 Bombus were observed at
flowers of Pedicularis, probably solely after
nectar as scopal hairs showed no pollen. These
bees, both queens were the only visitors to the Pedicularis
patch during 1½ hours of observation.
July 7
Most day overcast with occasional rain our
shone intermittently in the morning & early
afternoon. Most obvious insect about
the Bunting area behind & adjacent to
ARL was the large "red" Chironomid
adults — there in small swarms around
the bunders, ponds and adjacent areas. Towards
evening 5-7 pm & on until 11:00 pm no
wind was blowing and large swarms
of them were very conspicuous — anywhere
from 3 per c³m up to several hundred per
cubic meter. Most of them are males but
the emergence is not over yet. There has
been a gradual but steepening increase
in their numbers since July 3. Bunting
this evening were gathering large moth.
