Aberd 1951 H. Barrows, Alaska Sampling Notes July 5. Meter plot area on grid of ridge. Insect activity generally increased on last tenie especially with regard to adults. Many more Sphyrhids & anthomyiids active as well as such Diptera a mycetophilids, Cecidomyiidae and Spiders. Spiders seem to be more diversified in numbers of spp and found under almost any situation examined including pool surfaces and their waters. A few Chironomids observed in flights over pools but quantitatively negligible, perhaps greater activity may have taken place over the sun out. Observed red-tailed Bombus sitting on flower of Betasites, apparently after nectar and pollen; similar situated in observed in a patch of Pedicularis. More and more sphyrhids noted in floral heads of Ranunculus nivealis, and working near base of petals for nectar. In this process they became covered with pollen and in many of the flies examined around Ranunculus nivealis patches the body of a fly is covered with a fine yellow bloom - the pollen of the buttercup. Captured a queen Vespa which was flying over the open tundra. A "Nectriids" observed in flight over the ridge area. Considerable Dungfly activity observed wherever there are any number of willows - otherwise only 1 of 2 noted in several square meters of open tundra.
