Sampling notes
July 3 of shore area - additional specimens under
the pebbles - probably 3 to 10 per sq. m.
An exploratory excursion out to ridge west
of ridge plot area in afternoon showed
a remarkably increase of midges in wing
especially the large pectinate antennated
males (see collection). Many Tenthredinidae
on high polygons covered with Willow growth,
with 5 per sq. meter. Old lemming
burrows with rotting vegetative matte, near
entrances yielded 10-20 Typhid adults
per burrow opening. A few, 1 or less per
sq. meter, Fungivoridae (=Myzotopelidae)
were observed. Occasionally a specimen
Scopaeuma vulpenium was flushed
and it flew skyward at 10 to 30 feet
height. Others were observed flying near
head. First Queen bumble bee captured
and additional ones noted, but not
captured. In an area approximately 1 sq.
acre 10 queens were noted - some in old lemming burrows - in 2 1/2 hrs of observation.
2 mm Noctuid (q.l.) pupal cases picked
up on high polygons and were brought
in for rearing. Some specimens apparently were
feeding on Tenthredinid adults,
and some were probably taking Anthomyiid
