Banking on grid. Traps attacked by Snowy Owl.
2 Bunting killed 1 banded +1 unbanded - traps
bent up as badly as when dogs bother them. A
similar instance occurred on afternoon of
September 12th at about 6:00 pm. One owl
smaller than the Snowy Owl was noted in
company with the Snowy Owl - its identity in
question owing to darkness but did not appear
to be a young Snowy Owl. I have broken up
the grid trap arrangement owing largely to
the concentration of Bunting about the 1st
row of traps (#6+7 in particular) and have
concentrated the 3 funnel traps (G5,6,7)
all four clover leaves and I moved to funnel
trap. Visited Johnny Bottum's magnetic
station and also the Bureau of Standards
atmosphere set up, continuing to run
soil samples from Butlin's Mana.
Day overcast light powder snow early
this morning ponds with light ice shut
in them. Chironomid larvae, especially
large red one easily demonstrable in mud
in bottoms without vegetation. One of the
soil samples from Butlin Mana (ice from
high polygon - mainly grass area) yielded large
number of Staphylinid and Oribatid
adults plus usual collembola.
