Journal Bartow Alaska June 29 at about 15 MPH. In the afternoon it drizzled some. In the morning I went with Pool to the Barrel Area. In some parts of the area the shorebirds were active. In the area just S of the ERL a pair of Parasitic Jaegers were observed in territorial disputes with Pomorica Jaegers. The Parasitic Jaegers appear to have established a territory in that area. Displays of Baird's Sandpiper, Dunlin, and Semipalmated Sandpiper, Golden Plover, and Pectoral Sandpiper were observed. Red Phalarope's were observed copulating. A Long-tailed Jaeger was observed at the S end of this area. In the afternoon I walked around Family Lagoon. In the area to the E of Family Lagoon south of Beach Ridge there were few birds. An occasional Dunlin, Pectoral Sandpiper, or Golden Plover was seen. A Sabine's Gull was observed in this area. A Yellow-throated Loon was observed flying over. It landed in some open water on the W side of Family Lagoon but soon flew away. On the W side of Family Lagoon birds were more numerous. Many Dunlin pairs and Red Phalaropes were present in the North Area. Semipalmated Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, and Golden Plover were observed. Displays of Semipalmated Sandpiper and Dunlin were observed. Several pairs of Steller's Eiders rested in small pools and a flock of about 100 Old Squaw flew overhead in a southerly direction.
