Colcarius leporinus
June 24 Paint birds were observed scotford about the
turks. At one place 3 males and 2 female were
seen associating together. A dead male was found
at the N end of the Britton Area. It was
in good condition and probably died from running
into a wire. The nest that was found yesterday
was examined and was found to contain one egg.
June 25-August 27
The longspurs had a bad summer. I found six nests
containing a total of 20 eggs. at then I knew
at seven that bitched and only one bird that probably
was fledged. The longspurs appeared to give up and
small unpaired groups were found throughout the summer.
The first birds in winter plunge were seen around 6th
September about July 20. On the night of June 30
large flocks of birds mostly in winter plumage moved
into the Barrow Area. They stayed till the end of
August but it appeared that the numbers were decreasing
at that time. At Cup Thumps large numbers
of winter-plumaged longspurs were present. They migrated
downwards on 1st and eventually migrated across
the Bering Sea.
