R.B. Hamilton 1965 Calidris Erythropes mauri Barrow Alaska June 25 One Adult female bird was observed feeding in Holmes' Marsh. This bird was very reddish with the red occurring as streaks in the back. It's bill was, very long and the tip was decurved. It did not look like a Semipalmated Sandpiper at all. In coloration it resembled a White-rumped Sandpiper but it was more streaked. Jun. 30 Two of these birds were observed along the ice mound trail to Mincout. They were very timid and could not be approached. Control Marsh. July 1 Two of these birds were observed along the mound trail to Mincout. They were at the part of the trail that is covered with little puddles of water. They were very tame and could be approached to within 10 ft. in the woods. July 6 One Western Sandpiper was observed in Mincout Marsh in the afternoon. July 9 Five Western Sandpipers were observed at Footprint Lake. There may have been many more there, because there were many flocks of pyp flying around that were too far away for identification. July 10 Two Western Sandpipers were observed in Control Marsh. July 11 One Western Sandpiper was observed feeding in Footprint Lake. July 21 One bird of this species was observed feeding among the puddles in the road on the way to the meadow lake. This species is breeding plenmly.
