Numenius phaeopus
Aug. 20 Barrow Alaska - As Dr. Pitelka and I were driving
along the road to the Voth Area I saw a large
strutting
bird sitting on the grass to the right of the
road. The bird flew, as we stopped, to the 5 over
Family Lagoon. The bird was brownish and there were
no conspicuous marks. I could not see the bill but
felt the bird was either a Whimbrel or a Marbled
Godwit. I could Dr. Pitelka thought it was the
former. Eventually the bird called and the call heard
was that of this species.
