Falco rusticolus
Borrow Alzake -
Aug. 23
About 1700 a large falcon flew over pursuing pursued
by a female Pomegrine Jaeger which was giving
the "triple call". Both birds were about the same
size and the Gyrfalcon was brownish. I was not
thinking and thought that the bird was a Pomegrine
Falcon. Dr. Pittocker saw the bird fly directly overhead
and said it was a Gyrfalcon. On reflection I recall
that the Pomegrine Jaeger is considerably larger than
the Pomegrine Falcon. This hawk was flying N
along Bixby Ridge over Toplins N 24° W.
Aug. 26
A Gyrfalcon was observed flying E over Frist Lake.
The bird was brownish with a top and below with the
hood lighter. It appeared that perhaps the color was due to
bird brown streaks on a whitish background. There was
no moustache mark on the face. The bird was pursued
by a flock of about 20 Dovewatches.
Aug. 27.
A Gyrfalcon was again observed flying N over Lino
N and W pursued by a female Pomegrine Jaeger. This
time I was able to identify the bird. I believe all
three observations were made of the same bird.
