I.D. Hamilton 1965 Lampronetta fischeri July 12 Barrow Alaska - A flock of 3 males were observed flying W over Fresh Lake. The birds were light backed and in that respect resembled Common Eiders. The "spectacles" were immediately apparent however, and identification was "easy". July 29 Eight birds of this species were observed on a grass-filled pond which was located on the high ground to the S of lines XIII and XIV. Four of the birds were females. Three flushed; the fourth was accompanied by four young. The young swam at the mother's feet; they huddled close together. The mother constantly made sounds at them. The mark on the face around the eyes was very difficult to see. There was a light spot near the base of the bill. The shape of the flattening around the bill was also distinctive. Aug 1 The females of this species were observed flying over the small ponds to the S at Walskyg Slope. Lampronetta Fischeri is now Somateria Fischeri pn Aou 1998
