R. B. Hamilton 1965 Journal Barrow Alaska Aug 23 The day was partly cloudy and moderately warm. In the morning Dr. Pitulko and I pulled in lines IVA 2-3 IVB. We again saw the Brant-like Gulls in the Utku Arctic, we saw our first large flock of Quails. There were about 18 - only adult and going mostly to the latter). Dr. Pitulko thought he saw an immature Brant, Sandpipers but he was unable to collect it. In the afternoon Dr. Pitulko and I sat at lines XIII and XIV and then lines V and VII. The wind in the S side at Volobsky slough contained good numbers of Dunlin and Pectoral Sandpipers. After supper Steve and I went to set out lines VII and VIII. The ground was too wet however and we were unable to put the traps out. In the afternoon we saw two groups of two immature jaegers. All four could fly. A large Falcon which Dr. Pitulko said was a Gyrfalcon being chased by a small Peregrine Jaeger. It was about the same size as the jaegers. Aug 24 The day was partly cloudy. During the night and early morning 7- wind was from the W at about 20 MPH. The immature Pectoral Sandpipers seem to have migrated. In the morning I ran the trap lines and also in the evening after the movie. Two flocks of Eider flew over lines XIII and XIV in the evening.
