Hose Mt., 470-5200 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
June 5, 1933 (cont.)
"mine" is encountered in head of canyon.
Pack rat sign numerous in the 3 me Lone
or in me of the mine adds. Country on
west side now opens up with bare hills
with scattered groups of Doug. Spruce &
Oaks. There is little brush. It is on the
crest of these bare hills that the gopher
sign is numerous.
Before reaching The bare hills, one
descends a slight swale - goes thru gate
(Cym road) a fence & climbs slightly
at extensive demi-bare knob which is
heavily wooded on the east side. Then
another swale, in which on the east side
is a pine deer hunter's camp at the head
of canyon that descends east side.
The timber in this "east side" area is
a heavy growth of large Doug. Spruce
and Incense Cedar. It appears the
old trees & many are gigantic.
Then another knob, higher and
baser than the first & then a dip amid
a swale where presumably Cold
Springs is located.
Browse, Canada seen in deer camp
swale. Attitude was one of decoying intruder
away from nest! Canada Ratcatcher &
Worapackets heard in heavy woods.
