692 Hose Mt., 470-5200 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. June 5, 1933 (cont.) "mine" is encountered in head of canyon. Pack rat sign numerous in the 3 me Lone or in me of the mine adds. Country on west side now opens up with bare hills with scattered groups of Doug. Spruce & Oaks. There is little brush. It is on the crest of these bare hills that the gopher sign is numerous. Before reaching The bare hills, one descends a slight swale - goes thru gate (Cym road) a fence & climbs slightly at extensive demi-bare knob which is heavily wooded on the east side. Then another swale, in which on the east side is a pine deer hunter's camp at the head of canyon that descends east side. The timber in this "east side" area is a heavy growth of large Doug. Spruce and Incense Cedar. It appears the old trees & many are gigantic. Then another knob, higher and baser than the first & then a dip amid a swale where presumably Cold Springs is located. Browse, Canada seen in deer camp swale. Attitude was one of decoying intruder away from nest! Canada Ratcatcher & Worapackets heard in heavy woods.
