Euarctos americanus (1)
Silvine
1933
Mad R. ford, 2700 ft., above Santa, Trinity Co., Calif.
May 28, 1933
Observed one for a few moments this
morning. It was mett almost face to
face in narrow, gravelly, scattered oak
covered ravine. Was evidently feeding
on grass for it was nosing down the damp
of grassy spots and along the small
trickle of water. Pilage was dirty black
and ragged. Appeared to be 2 1/2 feet
high at shoulder and weigh in neighborhood
of 100 lbs. Then 15 yds. distant and
coming my way, I shrank and it
made off up the steep head of the
ravine into timber at a lumbering
this surprisingly rapid gait. I could
not find much evidence of its lawn eaten
grub but it probably was for there
were no signs of diggings or overturned
rocks., Elevation 3000 ft.
