8-17-34 Amaranthus albus L. Coats II. 173; Bon 265 SVI I 222 = A. gracilans L. § 372. F-ly f2. Villeneuve Dump. It erect to at least 2 ft., plant distinctly pyr- amidall with long along almost horizontal branches at base (the branch collected was 19 in long and itself much branched). St very pale green, show- ing conspicuously whitish, small early-edged. Seed however is ± 1 mm as 10-23-30. Upper part with awns? 1 mm as dice SVI II 98. Cfd with A. retroflexus L., A. lividus L. and A. caudatus Willd. all from Villeneuve Dump. 8-19-34 ? Polygonum mite Solmsk Coats III 206; Bon 275; SVI I 2/18 = P. laxiflorum Weille BVH 100; SGT 319. Villeneuve - Bouveret. In looks very much like P. Hydropiper L. from same region but has taste herbaceous only while P.H. has a definite strong pepper taste. Also has same translucent dots as P.H when held up to light (20x) [note: dots on P. lapatifolium show as depressions (20x)]. Resents towards base leaf dots such as P. H. has more strongly all over. Bracts of infl are fringed as in all (Coats) while bracts of inf in P.H are often quite fringless or with only few hairs. Sheaths of lower stg stiffish appressed hairs are long ciliate (P. H. steglabra, and with shorter hairs on edge but not definite in this respect to ident surely). Perianth parts for 14/1934. Perianth parts 4 or 3.
