5-20-34 Viola montana L (= V. striata Strebli non Hornem, V. canina var Ruppri [All] Selinq. Thelling, V. canina var montana Hartman) SUKI 459. Fl. On Masiellon or little path which starts upward & westward from near the house. Els. large, conspicuous & decidedly blue for violet. Acc to Suk north pass. Peduncles borne on the stems, sepals very finely pointed, stipules fringed, no basal rosette between the stems (cf with the usual V. silvestris) (Plants like BOWELL II ^ 54 V canina v ^ 55- V. lactea in this respect. Often only 1 at a point with dried remains of last years &c. In one case the plant has a more tufted look because the root stock has a number of short branches & the 1-serral flowering stems issuing from each of these give off effect. But there is no basal rosette # of brat & of the underground root-stock-branches. Note that young fling-st. may occasionally look liked stilled rosetta.) Lower lob about 2.5 x 1.5 cm. v cordate; the upper ones larger & more elongated v more nearly truncate. Stems erect to 11 in high. Fl 25-30mm front tip of upper petel to tip of lower petals. Spur 8mm long (from tip of peduncle), stout, straight, grooved, white v alinted so, looking to be twice as long as the conspicuous sepal-appendages. There appendage (in the fl.) 4mm long, toothed, conspicous. Lower stip- ules ±10mm, upper stipules ±15mm long. To stipules (except for underleaf & brat tip) at any where near ½ as long as petiole.
