8-19-37 continued Lycopus uniflorus Michx G 709, BvB III No 2 FL, adv. fl. v stolone. (n var.) Carex paupercula Mielix, G 238, BvBI 417 Fl. Ditch by R.R. shortly north of Island Port Station. Cpl with C. linosa N (of 8-14-37). Same differences as noted 7-20-37. In addition now noted: C.l. stoloniferous not tufted C.p. tufted C.p. sometimes with fl at tip of spikes Note also C.p.: female spikes show signs of bearing head tips, a few off at base in some cases. C.p. scales mostly fallen; none awned as in ill (B.v.B.) but all tapered to subulate tips; a few hardly longer than perigynia, others to 1/2 again as long as perigynia. [See 7-14-30 # 351 vs 352 which seem likely to have been the same as spec of 7-20 v 8-19-37] [9-11-37 ? C. paupercula (n var.) same locus as 7-20-37 Assumed when col. tube C.p. But perigynia are now dark purplish brown. (Comparison with dead remains of C. atrata L. varicata Booth shows shape & perigynia different). In the 2 culms collected, terminal spike has female tip and the other spikes seem all to have had one or two male base.
