492 8-20-30 Carex Fr H.P. mid to Butler Rd in sphagnum on no. side about halfway. Strongly suggests C. Crinita Lam var gynandra Schwein & Torr #320 = C. gynandra Schwein BvB 425, but aheens (perp leucular) are strongly exserted & joined together on one edge ( or at least hollowed out on one side) giving effect much like ill C. Tuckermania Dewey #366. Culms margin clumps. 3 ft high. Basal lvs reduced to firm, acute, reddish brown sheaths scarcely if at all fibrillosae. 2 lvs 4-10mm wide, rough near top edges & midrib beneath, otherwise smooth beneath, sheaths about 1/8pld & somewhat to touch. Culm slightly dular & single, ± as long as lvs. 2 spikes & on slender drooping peduncles. ?spikel 1½-2¼ in long x ½ in wide (excluding spreading tips of scales) Lowest bract sheaths much overtopping infl. 4-7mm wide. 2 spikes & ter- iminal on slender peduncle the uppermost 1¼-1¾ in and another about ½ as long sessile shortly below. (In one spec the lower spike was partly ♀) Often ♀ spikes at tip or sometimes not. In ♁ spikules scale almost white at base, light brown above 4.5mm long of which 2 mm is rough &awn rattles like ill C. Crinita BvB, body of scale 3-nerved, tips spreading. Perigynia oval? 3.3 mm high, smooth, nerved, beardless light green at tip almost white at base. full. Culms brown, ndrows at base contacted
