9-16-27 Epilobium Fr. Crafts River in little forest Whittingford upper cabin v on beach at Whitecliff. On grassaceous because seed have tuft of silky hairs Epilobium. Plant conspicuously grayish green with short incurved hairs (hairs A longer plentiful enough to account for color) & spright or decumbent, very leafy & branched. St. purplish. Loos appx oval, sessile lanceolate, entire, largest 3 1/8 x 5/4 in but mat loo 1/2 x 7/6 in. Margins not revolute. Capsules short pedicelled & 2 1/6 in w/8 hairs like rest of plant. Cona white. Seeds keeledge and (38x) minutely roughened in lines. F. molle Torr & 576 = E. strictum Nuttall BvBH 692 seems best guess. 9-16-27 Betula Fr. Prob bet. Crafts Rd. & Whittingford lower camp Crafts River. Very like all B. manal. Bv BI 612 (not in #) one of fruiting bracts 3-lobed. Twigs pubescent & only very sparsely (if at all) glandular waxy. Lo not obviously glandular dotted below, hence prob not B. glandulosa Michx. Wings nutlet thick & not wider than body of fr. Bract glabrous, ciliate, covering only body of fr. Wings of fr. project ing on both sides), prominently embossed below, then curved in and tip curved outward
