char. of this species very distinctly 9-13-29 Populus. No flowers. Young scrubby growth on path to Whitecliff. Petiole very flat. Petiole P. tremuloides Michx. G 328, BVBI 590. Lvs about 1 3/4 x 2 in (i.e. broader than long). Very short-pointed at apex, appearing distinctly rounded. Broadly rounded at base (not at all cordate). Mostly entire at base, but low-toothed above. 3-nerved at base, glabrous, dull, coriaceous. Petioles very young turn reddish brown, contrasting with the gray of bark & grayish green of lvs. # 112 9-13-29 Acer rubrum L. G 558, BVBI 495 No flowers. Small growth on path to Whitecliff (Allan pointed out a tree 30 ft high near by). Young twigs & petioles bright red. Veins reddish. Lvs whitened beneath & shape quite as ill BVIB. Note that some lvs have the red crystalline patches (dis- ease or insect-produced) noticed in 1927 at Passaconaway (trail to K.P.). Cf with below. 9-13-29 Acer spicatum Lam. G 558, BVBI 497 Ft. Rd towards Crabber Station from Highlands River Bridge. Allan calls it "Whitewood".
