[Consulting desc. of O. papilionacea in Thompson's 'Flowering Plants of the Riviera': Pollen masses not "flaskish" but oliv- drop; spur oblong rather than conica? with thick blunt tip. no "scarlet" inf1. no def. "stripes." ] side. Beasts longer than vary, the lowest being short as long as flower. Ovaries twisted so that flowers stand at all angles. Spurs 7mmx thick, i.e. about 1/2 length of vary and thick (3mmx month) barely tapering to its blunt tip, lightish in color sur- fused with purplergreen with a definite darker line down the middle in front. Sepals dull greenish-purplish with 3 obscure veins; the lateral ones slightly rounded at base beneath and spreading into almost vertical plane, the tips slightly curved back. There lateral sepals are 11x4 mm. Sepals all rather blunt. Petals acumular in color, linear, narrow (1/2 mm), shorter than upper sepal with it (the free) forming a hood. Lip only slightly longer than caque, sub-orbicular 10-12mm diam but edges sometimes slightly cur- ulate. Lip slightly twisted or edge slightly droop- ing so as to give a long effect, not def narow at base. Lip is whitish at very base shading into a bright purple which at edges on underside is almost brown. The white part limits itself in a narrow V at base of lip with a purple line down the center of the V. The thich spur approaches the horizontal or vertical according to position of flower but always lies snugly in the hollow of the closing vary. Glands 2, sac1. Connective makes small equal sided rhomb between & above pollen sacs
