584) Peganum Normale L. (see 5-12-32) 1-2-31 Dead plant w/its beside fort at Porto-Ri Thought at first glance to be Ruta graveolens but evidently not. Herb-dicostyledon St (several sometimes arising from top of same root) ridged, to 18 in high. Conyza-like branched above (see def Crate I-IX) w/its lemmas string-like franchises? +1/2 in. Many seems superior. Capsule depressed globose, slightly lobed, 6-7 mm high sometimes slightly broader. Capsule 3-celled (occasionally 2-celled), splitting slightly or completely loculicidally. Seeds about 15 in each cell attached to axis, brown, with locular outside coat reticulated (20x), irreg-ular in shape but generally like section of orange, 4 mm greatest length. Capsules seems to sit on disks around edge which are remains of calyx or involucle bracts. These (perhaps 5 in number) consist of narrow (.5-.7 mm) bracts linear (1/2 to 1 mm) segments which are simple or 3-parted. Capsule sometimes spiculate w/its remains of style. Locelt ex-stip-ulate, cut for almost to base in narrow linear segments which are again cut into segments, the whole effect being somewhat fan-shaped but dried condition & low v fact that young branches seem to be growing from axila make study difficult. Now-mottly
