June 10. Collected all day on Pretty River. This stream in passing through the perra grit is a very picturesque sight to behold, the grit having been undermined by the stream high bluffs have fallen down upon which the students of by zero days have engraved their names. On the upper part of this grit here are certain layers holding great number of a certain plant. The layers being made almost black by them & all other fossil ferns. A short distance down the stream there is a claye almost black color quite thin appearance, on this shale layer is a bed of sandstone about 10 in. Thick holding great number of fossils but hard to get good specimens at the end up with the stream but between
