135 August 9. Portland Head. Since Portland Head from elements note: "The present face of Portland St. strikes but little north of east and the dip of the strata must be nearly south. The head presents a bold steep face on the west and north sides and appears to slope gradually away on the southeast. It seems probable that the slope of the head is determined by the structure, thus being the up-tilted north west corner of a faulted block bounded by 2 faults. The objection to this hypo- thesis is that the beds of the head appear to dip about in accord with the sandstone exposed on the shore as though the section were continuous. However the line is about 300 feet from the shore and the observed dip in the hill and on the shore was about 20°. This dip for the natural overall include 1000 feet of strata plus 530 feet, the height of the head = 1530 fuly 9 and time in order to make the head part of the same sandstone.
