lighter color than that coming from the
casks.
Leaving La Crosse St. Clair we followed the
telegraph path and as we proceed around the
shore we found the coral reef at the most
southeasterly point within 35 feet of the sea.
Going farther the shore line turned northeasterly
across the straits and the strata began to rise
to higher and higher altitudes. Near the first
houses at Forteau the granite is seen on both
sides of the bay.
We had a letter of introduction from Mr.
Grant to Capt. Sam Mercer who is catching
fish for J.B Bros. On him we called with
a view of his putting us up but as he where
only for the summer, being a Newfoundlander,
he was unable to do so. However he took us
to Mrs. Flynn, a rather old lady who takes
care of the preacher when he is at Forteau
to see if she would not put us up. She
finally consented to do so provided we would
sleep together in a three-quaters bed,
