July 10-1910 Sunday Had a pleasant night aboard the Vertena. The morning is hazy with the smell from the north, the direction we want to go in. Outside in the Gulf there is fog and so we conclude to stay back of Dorod Island at least for the morning. At noon it is evident that we can not get out today. After dinner we have the launch lowered in the cradle and after a great deal of uncertain effort on our part and the engine it is apparent that all are decided greeners at running a launch. Finally we go to the strait of Dorody Island where there is a launch and have the man lord over one engine. The difficulty may lay in the small(?) batteries but after awhile we see that too much gasoline and cylinder oil is being put into the engine. After a little instruction we start off again and for Almidom but as the running of the boat is so uncertain and the distance not less than four miles I conclude to return to the boat. There are also some practicing at running the engine. Towholf concludes that he has not the strength to fly the wheel to start the engine and it is apparent that only a strong man can do it readily.
