July 7th, Thursday. Birch Cove. Made up my mind to sail both in the Vertona tomorrow morning. Deposited in the Bank of Montreal some hundred dollars (had to pay $1.75- collection charge, my B.G. draft) at the rate of 3% per annum. but on credit only customs, charges upon etc $4.00 Purchased fire and some necessary food for the two of us. The crew have their own food. Paid in cash $9.17 The customs officer Mr Eckers said we did not have to take out a license to fish as a side issue on our trip. To fish in port waters requires a license of ten dollars. Mr. Thorne agreed to let us have his naptha launch for charged at the rate of $1.00 per day for 50 days. He to pay for the first barrel of naptha ($25.00 @ $3.0c) and I for what is used of the second barrel. He will put in extra batteries and other of the most valuable parts.
