Mexico City Sep 1. Saturday. Called at the Geological Institute and met many of the members back from the Jorullo and Celaya trip. In the afternoon with Cleland visited the Chapultepec gardens. In the evening had dinner at Maxim doré with Mr. and Mrs. Story, Miss Bassett and Cleland. Then packed off for the Vera Cruz excursion starting tomorrow. Vera Cruz trip. Sunday Sep. 2. The entire excursion party of about 80 persons started away from Intercanaco depot, at 8 A.M. All day I enjoyed scenery of volcanoes cinder cones and tuffe hills. In the afternoon we had a good view of the Huextl volcano or Malinche, the black color of the volcano evidently due to cumin trees. Just after seeing Malinch we occasionally could see part of Orizaba. In this region at about 3 P.M. we could see great examples of sand dunes, the sand derived out of the bed of rivers and picked up in the croscant
