14. Striped Rat Family: Murinae Genus Species - (318) Serial numbers - (318, - Sept.10, Paracemurane) (A) (334, 335, 336, 337 - Table mt. - Cape Town - Sept.20) (337, 338, 339, 340 - Sept.21, Milnerton, Cape Town) (349, 350, 351, - Sept.26 - Gariep) (422 - Oct.2, Gariep) Many taken in Southwest Africa at Krümbenstein farm. They seemed to prefer to live in thick low clumps of bushes. Have seen them running about under the bushes in the daytime. They take to baited traps very readily. Several trips I have captured two at a time in a trap. Their skin is very delicate so great care must be taken in skinning. Have seen clumps of bushes alive with striped mice of all sizes. They make a high pitched squeaking noise or the sunny about. In these patches of brush I have found as many as 4 kinds of birds and gerbils living together. They are common in many different habitats for I have trapped them along rivers in arid Southwest, along the sea coast at Milnerton, in the Karoo and at the foot of Table Mt. in Cape Town.
