8. Vley Otomy-Veld Rat 17 Subfamily-(Otomyinae) Genus-species-Otomys ? Serial numbers-(289-Aug.29, Perseverance)(293, Aug.30, Perseverance)(303-Sept.1, Perseverance) (309, 310,-Sept.9, Perseverance)(319, 320 321-Sept.10, Perseverance)(323-Sept.11- Perseverance)(324, 325-Sept.12, Perseverance)(326, 327-Sept.13, Perseverance)(341, 342, 343, 344 345, 346, 347-Garies-Sept.25) This rat was in the greatest abundance of all specimens caught in traps along the Swartberg River. They had regular networks of tunnels in the grass and succulent plants. Their burrow was in abundance at favorite feeding places. They ate the succulent plant leaves as their main food. Were usually nocturnal in habit though I have seen them move rapidly about in the daytime in their tunnels.
