Aug 9-97 Monday, Omennal Greenland. We have the honor to be the guests of Rev. Hjalmar Knutzen. Mr. White, Hickley and I occupy a small room on the second floor overlooking the garden, the Omennal front with its common house and the north shore of Boursaal Peninsula. The Danish beds are high and we are buried in side-dressings two foot or thick. After a refreshing rest we left the village here at 9 a.m. and shortly after a native knocked at our door. Upon answering him he entered with a tray and three cups of tea with lemon, cake and coffee. We partook and lie down again for 3/4 hour more. At 9 we are called in to breakfast and me it is fit for a king. The meal begins with an egg, anchovies and brown or white bread. This is followed by fresh turbot and a light ale made in Omennal by one of the natives. The material for the ale brewing are from Danmark. Schnapps is also served at the time. I believe this to be what the Germans in America call Kummel, The next course consists of Ostramijm and preserved strawberries. The last course consists of Switzer cheese and a very good strong coffee. Rev. Knutzen in serving stimulants is always careful to first form a little wine glass.
