August 3-97 Tuesday, Baffin Land. Rose early and examined the freight in the hold. Found them so much crushed that I could not determine whether all our material is present. It rained early this morning and by 8:30 the fog became very dense. I went out to collect insects but as far as beetles is concerned no progress was made. However I put around dry hills along the west cliffs and done turned over rocks and in this way secured a few flies, spider, and one beetle. Also cleaned a few earth worms. These are about one inch long and about 1/32 inch thick. The color is a very faint pink, nearer white than red. I found the under parts in one case one species and in another three or four species together. At 11 A.M. it began to rain again. The print men Jansen's Cabin is called Signum's print. At 4 P.M. we took up the anchor and by 4:15 we steam away with Jansen as pilot. It has been foggy and raining all day and no one present to see it does not clear up. By five we drop Jansen in his whale boat which is manned by Charles Fitzgibald, Mr. Porter, Mr. Kane, Frederick Carpenter and me Eschmier.
