In the afternoon the wind let down and the temperature was quite pleasant. The sea was calm and oily. The peculiarity of the afternoon was the mirage effects in all directions. During this day we came pretty up from 200 small Cod schooners heading north. At 9.30 P.M. it is raining a little. Temperature at night 43° F. July 29 Thursday Off Labrador. About three o'clock this morning the vessel put in at Turnavik to put the letters ashore and to purchase some fresh fish. Enough Cod were purchased for breakfast, the rem of the fish not having begun in price. The lowest temperature last night was 43°. This morning the atmosphere is somewhat damp and the Labrador coast indistinct. Later we enter a fog bank. It is 2.30 P.M. before we get out sight. Now it is a warm and pleasant afternoon.
