The flora about here while it has some of the
finest plants seen about Washington impregnates one
as wholly different. The trees are all small hard-
ly any exceeding 20 feet high. Grass is very abundant
and more by far than at home. Flowers
are on all sides and apparently quite a variety.
I came across a bog and found two species
of orchids and a third species along a fence
and around stumps. The conifers are the most
conspicuous plants. Some small specimens are
very pretty and abundant.

July 23-1897. Friday. Kellys Cove, Cape
Breton, Nova Scotia,
Arose in the morning to find that our whole
boat had been taken from the davits and
placed in the water. The drainage plug had
been taken out so our boat was away
spilling when we found it. The greater
portion of the morning was spent by us in
getting the boat ashore, and hauling her out.
