At first the Massanutten sandstone much resem-bles the Martinsburg because much of it is derived from the beds above pieces of a clay shale for the Martinsburg sandstone or shale, I have however the former attains its regular character of spotted red and yellow whitish quartzite. It is always a much harder and more regularly bedded sandstone than that of the Martinsburg. The Massanutten is a sandstone or rather quartzite throughout.
