Burlington, N. C. Temporary Rad. Key Dist. Fla. Learned much in regard to the construction and between Knights Key and Key West. Asked him in regard to the depth of the soft sand between the Keys. She told me that they have dredged of fret quantities out of which is made the real red. It is put in 2 foot deep courses and given left for 2 weeks to settle, and it is also placed over the rock turtle [illegible] and gets as hard as rock. And if the sand was taken up in Kemp's Channel where it comes in thicknesses from 6 to 15 feet, and no hard bottoms ever struck. Depth of water on the sand here 6 to 8 feet. To the west of Boca Chica in the channel to the mouth the Channel Keys the sand is from 8 to 10- fathoms thick. To the north of Bird Key locally the sand is soft for go fath. To this depth piles have been driven. Thought to be a "soft hole". To the east of the Daddle Branch Keys and to the west of Shell Key locally there is soft mud down to 60 feet. Piles driven to this depth.
