Tuesday Dec 19 - 1911.
Took the Riverside car from Ortega across
the St. Johns river and some miles down the river
from Jacksonville. This is where the County
and San and Rod Clubs are situated.
Just over the St. Johns river may be seen
some fine "Holly" trees and which I photographed.
In the woods there is also a Hue-shell artifacts
lying. In the sand lying around saw a few
marine fossils but nothing to indicate any great
antiquity.
From the bridge on the St. John's one gets
a distant view of Jacksonville. The water has been
to be the dead hog waters and attempt about
22 miles up from the mouth of the river the
shells showed plenty of barnacles though small.
Many oyster shell heaps are also seen but
all of these are lighter than the "far" 22 miles
down the river which is at the sea point. There
also I saw heaps of gastropods used as road
metal. Have some specimens. They are also larger
from the mouth of the river. Thought I saw some
unio among these gastropods.
