St. Albans, Vt., Oct. 19, 1930
Sunday
A bright cool morning that soon clouded over and slight snow squalls and much wind in the afternoon.
Started out at 8.45 A.M. south to Magre Lodge of Brantm cgl. Lay-well was at once attracted by the granite rocks that he thought must be of Old age. However the structure soon showed him that the dip of the slate was at a low angle but mine a layer folded with a low anticline in one place. The whole is much cleared and drawn out explaining why there is granite here.
At first the thickness was thought to be over 100' but when the low dip was discovered we concluded the thickness may not exceed or could be allowed 30'.
Saw one layer of builder that had much circular cryptogon growth. At another time Keilt & I here to more regulational type of Cryptogon.
Then went to see the layer of leaves and the three small ones in the Highgate. He agreed that Keilt is correct in regarding the growth due to Cryptogon that grows in vertical cylinders that we can see at least the first lay by about 5 to 6 inches in diameter. One of the smaller leaves also shows some of this type of Cryptogon. I must look up the building collected to see if figure of Highgate time.
