Number : R1-18-36 Photo : David B. Marshall Date : June 10, 1962 Location: Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge Legend : Nihoa millerbird on nest in shrubby growth of Chenapodium sandwicheum and Sida fallax near sum- mit of Miller's Peak on Nihoa. This bird is found on Nihoa's 146 acres and no where else in the world. It is hoped to establish the species on another island of the refuge. This may be the first nest of this bird found on Nihoa. It contained one egg which was being incubated by two individuals presumably male and female. Another form of the millerbird, considered by some to be a different species, was formerly present on Laysan and is now extinct. It can be said that this is one of the rarest birds in the world and even on Nihoa it is not very abundant.
